Home Sweet Home Improvements

Greetings from our new home in West Ridge! (I’ve blurred the numbers in case you are trying to stalk me.)

Today, I stayed home from work to meet the furniture delivery people and the fence installers.  It feels like we’re actually making progress and soon this place will feel like “home”.

Our old living room furniture was stuff that we had to buy from UIC because Ella destroyed it as a puppy.  It’s been slip-covered for the last four years to hide the damage she did to it and I’ve been counting down the days until we could get rid of it (or move it to the basement).  That day finally arrived!  In addition to new living room furniture, we also ordered a dining room table (we’ve been eating from a Pub Table because that’s what fit best in our condo and it was high enough to keep the dogs from snatching unattended food), and a sideboard.  We’re sorely in need of more storage, so this sideboard will hopefully help us hide the clutter a bit.

Now that the furniture has arrived, I’m not TOTALLY in love with it.  It’s just okay.  We need to move things around a bit, and decide whether it all really “fits”.  The love seat in the pictures below looks much lighter than it actually is.  In reality, the couch, love seat and chair are all a dark brown (mocha).

In addition to the new furniture, we’re also getting a new fence.  I think this is the part that I’m most excited about!  We could have easily stayed in our condo for a few more years, but it’s getting harder and harder to walk the dogs in all kinds of weather, and spend hours at the park with them each week.  The one thing we wanted the most was a yard for the dogs to play in, but since our new yard wasn’t fenced, we’ve still been walking the dogs.  Not anymore!!  The fence guys came today, and began work at 8 a.m.  They continued to work, even when it began raining.  They stopped working at 3:00 p.m., and will be back tomorrow to put up the rest of the fence.  I can hardly wait.  I might actually be giddy with anticipation!

2009 Tour of Elk Grove

August 1, 2009 at 9:34 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

Today was going to be a quick one: one race and then we’re gone.  But, we got there early, and then ended up hanging around to see the results, which  means I was able to get some photos from both heats of the Cat 5, the Womens Cat 3/4 and the Mens Cat 4 races.  Photos are posted here.  Congratulations to MS Racing for their great results today!

We won’t be at Elk Grove tomorrow because Cliff isn’t old enough to race in the Masters category tomorrow.  The trend seems to be 35+ this year, rather than the usual 30+, which misses Cliff by a hair.  Next up for us: Glencoe!

2009 Chicago Criterium

Yay for the internet!  How in the world did we ever survive before the internet existed?

Now that I have an internet connection at home, I was able to upload the photos from the Chicago Criterium.

We moved on Friday, but we failed to schedule internet and cable connections until just before our move, which means… we’ve been without internet for a few days.  Thankfully, the installers come this evening so I should able to get the photos from yesterday posted soon.

In the meantime, I’ve included a few pics of the new house for your viewing pleasure!  These pics were all taken prior to our moving in, so the “stuff” pictured belongs to the previous owner.

2009 Evanston Grand Prix

Life seems to have gotten in the way of racing and photography this summer.  We have less time to spend at the races, and we’ve made it to fewer races this year which is sad but at the same time exciting because in the meantime, we’ve bought a house and are moving soon.

The Evanston race is always nice because of it’s location, but I spend the entire race biting my lip with anxiety.  I’m constantly expecting a crash and always hoping that, when it does finally happen, it won’t be too bad.  I caught an amazing stunt of a crash at the start/finish in the 4/5 race (I think it was 4/5, but it may have been the 4s race).  Check it out here. I’m glad this guy is okay, but I’m sure his bike must be toast.

The rest of my Evanston photos start here.

I’m pretty impressed with the Soldier Field event.  I am not, however, impressed with my photos from the 4/5 race.  Oh well, here they are anyway.  Feel free to right click and save.  I just ask that you give me photo credit when posting to blogs and the like.

Glencoe Grand Prix – Special Project

June 25, 2009 at 10:38 pm | In Race Photos, cycling | Leave a Comment

Jon Knouse, the promoter for the Glencoe Grand Prix, asked me to join a team he has put together to develop a coffee-table book featuring the Glencoe Grand Prix.  I’m pretty excited about this venture because it will include interviews and other interesting information, alongside photos of the event.  The group working on this project include John Mullin (Tribune, SI.com) as the lead writer, several freelance writers, Jay Mirasol, Anna Inabinet, me and one other photographer who I haven’t yet met.

In our brainstorming session we came up with the following as ideas for features: amen corner, random locals watching the race from their driveways, winners from last year who are returning to defend the win, pro racers who travel to races and make very little money, the local racer with an interesting story (is that you?), Chicago Cuttin Crew (and their bus!)… What interesting ideas do you have?  Why should we feature you?  What interesting title idea do you have?

This project will be a labor of love and we hope you’ll enjoy the finished product.  Super exciting!

What a course!  That hill looked like a killer: 1/3 mile up hill, 2/3 mile downhill.  On any regular day, that hill would be tough for a lot of people, but add in the heat and humidity from Sunday and wowzer!

Photos are posted here.

I’ve managed to get the Cobb Park photos uploaded.  I’ll try and get to the Fox River Grove photos tomorrow evening.
